Evening Speaker Series

Putting the Pieces Together Toward Independence in Self Care and Life Skills

Presenter: Sheri Martin Soosaar has been an Occupational Therapist for 30 years working for a variety of community and private practice organizations.  In 2011 she opened her own Occupational Therapy Clinic in Waterloo called Creative Therapy Health Services.  The clinic is a unique space with a kitchen, a bright gym, and a “fine motor room”.  Her team provides OT and OT Assistant services for all ages and challenges in her clinic, the community, school, or home.  Creative Therapy works with children with a variety of needs to help them develop their building blocks of fine motor skills, gross motor skills, oral motor skills, visual perceptual issues, sensory processing challenges and challenges with emotional regulation.   They are goal oriented and work toward solutions such as independence with self-care tasks, school or leisure activity related goals.  Their approach is client centered and they always strive to make therapy fun!!

Sheri enjoys developing creative solutions to the everyday challenges encountered by her clients. For example, she utilizes mindfulness, and yoga as part of the therapeutic process and has developed a yoga class for persons with post-concussion syndrome.

Outside of work, Sheri enjoys outdoor activities including hiking, camping and cross-country skiing in addition to tap dancing, reading and teaching gentle yoga classes.

Description:  This is a workshop designed for families who would like to learn more about fostering self help skills in their loved ones with Down syndrome.  Sheri strongly believes in the importance of teaching building blocks of many skills to create a firm foundation upon which those skills can be developed.  The building blocks featured in this workshop can be applied to self care skills for any age group.  Sheri will also touch on life skills such as taking the bus and money concepts.  The key concepts that will be addressed are outlined below:
